Daelim DB-900 Toilet
WHERE: Seoul, South Korea
The Imperial Palace Boutique Hotel in Seoul was one of the first to install the DB-900 Toilet by Daelim, a smart toilet with motion-detecting sensors and high-tech features. The toilet is used in all 133 guestrooms at this super modern hotel, where features like an automatic seat cover opens and closes to greet guests as they enter the bathroom. A large LCD remote control mounts adjacent to the toilet with buttons to facilitate cleaning, activate bidet functions with position and pressure adjustments, control the heated seat temperature, and activate deodorizing or hot air drying functions.

WHERE: Bad Ragaz, Switzerland
The Grand Resort Bad Ragaz in Switzerland’s spa town of Bad Ragaz is known for the healing thermal waters that flow from the Tamina Gorge and feed the pools and spas of this expansive 150-year-old luxury resort. Every suite within this Leading Hotel of the World’s Spa Suite tower is completely fed by the thermal water, and comes standard with high-tech Geberit AquaClean smart toilets. The toilets feature heated seats and a hand-held remote control that allows users to adjust functions like bidet pressure, location, and drying power.

The Portland Japanese Garden is more than a pretty landscape; the garden seeks to act as a bridge between Japanese and American culture by providing an authentic Japanese experience on American soil. Everything within the garden was selected with careful intention, from the plants within the garden to the gates and structures that guide visitors through the grounds. Even the washrooms give a nod to Japanese culture, where high-tech Japanese toilets were installed in the men’s and women’s restrooms in 2017. The 17-acre property is home to a LEED-certified restroom, with a single Sun-Mar Centrex Composting Toilet. The restroom is located by the main parking area near the nature playscape, where a sign explains how to use the cutting-edge green technology inside. The toilet eliminates the need for water (the biggest source of toilet waste) or chemicals by using advanced technology that evaporates and composts human waste in an odor-free bio-drum installed beneath the ground.
Duravit SensoWash Starck Shower-Toilet
WHERE: Copenhagen, Denmark
Designed by one of the world’s most beloved designers, Philippe Starck, the Duravit SensoWash Starck Shower-Toilet’s sleek design makes it one of the most beautiful and high-tech thrones on the market. The toilet can be found inside the Tivoli Hotel in Copenhagen, where guests are able to control the nozzle position and jet strength of the rear, front, and oscillating wash functions via remote control. The remote can also store up to two user profiles, where programmable functions like seat surface temperature and air drying pressure can be saved. Starck’s design includes a power actuated lid and seat, as well as a night light and a self-cleaning wand for easy maintenance.

The toilet’s automatic pre-mist spray discourages waste remnants inside the bowl, while a remote control operated self-cleaning wand acts as a bidet with options for a front cleanse, soft rear cleanse, rear cleanse, oscillating cleanse, or a pulsating cleanse. Users can control the water temperature and pressure before selecting from five temperature settings for the built-in air dryer.

Although the composting toilets at La Sirena Eco Hotel may not look high tech from the outside, the technology used within these eco-friendly thrones is one of the top systems in green technology. The system was developed in-house at the hotel to eliminate clean, potable water waste while transforming human waste into a compostable, usable product that gives back to the natural environment and landscape. The toilets are built using natural materials and covered in smooth adobe clay to emulate a throne, while the polished wooden base provide a natural setting within these open-air bathrooms.
